Ortovox Check and Ride
£10.00
The Ortovox Check and ride is a nifty little gadget that can remind you of the avalaanche conditions of the day.
The idea is that you go to see the avalanche report in the morning, you then twist the dials on the check and ride to record the most important information.
This is then kept attached to your jacket for quick and easy reference.
For example, If the report says: "Today is a risk 4. There have been strong westerly winds leaving East facing slopes between 2000-3000m subject to windslab conditions.
North Facing slopes still have yet to fully stabilise since the last snow fall"
You can then set the dials so the following are highlighted: "4, Westerly Wind, 2500m, N , NE , E"
That would be a fair summary of the conditions. You then have this info to hand to aid in your decision making.
To some degree this is a bit of a gimmick, however it will encourage daily viewing of reports and discussion of avalanche conditions, so for the money is worth it for that alone.
This item is designed for off piste skiers and snowboarders, who can analyse off piste conditions and make suitable forecasts on slope stability. For inexperienced skiers you should have a guide, but even then this would be a good discussion tool.
