Ortovox 3+

Best For

Those after a simple transceiver with masking and will do some practise.

The Ortovox 3+ is a fully automatic 3 antenna digital transceiver with digital signal masking. The 3+ is as simple as possible with only one button that can be used in search mode and that is only needed in a limited scenario (multiple victims, multiple diggers). Sensitivity adjustment is automatic, and 5 arrows with distance offer directional information during the search to keep the searcher on track.

Search Mode

The 3+ has only one mode using the full array of digital processing tools. To put the 3+ in search mode, the two buttons on the top of the transceiver are pushed apart and the button pops up. In search mode the 3+ will display a course search graphic if no signal is received or show the number of transceivers (1,2,3 or 4+) and the distance and direction to the strongest signal.

As you approach the victim the 3+ increases the volume and frequency of the beeps to keep you moving in the right direction. Under 3 metres the 3+ uses a circular illustration to make pinpointing easier. The 3+ offers digital signal masking so that the signal can be eliminated after probe location, freeing up the searcher before the shovellers have extracted the victim.

The 3+ also has a Recco reflector to assist in resort based professional searches. More marketing than anything else.

Smart Antenna

When in transmit mode the 3+ will select it's transmitting antenna (from the 3 available) to optimise it's own detection. This will maximise the range at which the 3+ is detected if you are buried.

About You

If you like your electronic gizmos simple and menu free then the 3+ will suit you. A great easy to use transceiver with a marking function.

I was recommended this transceiver by someone on the Snowheads forum for its reliability, great functionality and simplicity of use. It certainly lived up to the good reputation. I particularly like the feature of being able to flag located tranceivers so you can simply move on to find others without interference from already located devices. This would make a huge difference in a catastrophic emergency. I have only used it in mock avalanche conditions and it worked well. Those of us with this transceiver seemed to learn to use it faster than other people with different brands. It is also helpful that many people have the same one, due to its popularity.

The straps for wearing the transceiver are simple to adjust. Because I am small there is a huge amount of excess ribbon, but I plan to cut and sew this to reduce entanglement. There's an elastic strap inside the pouch so that the transceiver does not become detached even when out of the pouch for searching etc.

On a one week off piste trip when it was turned on all day and also used in search mode in a couple of mock situations, the battery went from 99% to 84%. The batteries used are an easily available standard type, so when the time comes could be replaced in resort.

Facewest sold me this on a Wednesday early afternoon and it arrived Thursday before 1pm, just in time for my departure. I had phoned them to ensure this was possible. They were really pleasant to deal with and the price was great.

Make sure you and your comrades also all have good shovels and probes, as without these, locating people in hard packed avalanches is rather academic. My extendable metal avalanche shovel is great (including for clearing the drive of snow). Learning and practicing how to use it all efficiently certainly makes a difference to how quickly you can uncover someone.

An ideal avalanche transceiver. Simple to switch use, view and is solidly built. I like the reversion to transmit mode after two minutes of not moving the device should you be caught in a secondary avalanche while in search mode. Search indication is clear with great acoustic feedback. Multiple antennae is a great feature too. Instructions are clear and concise with good illustrations.

A step up from Ortovox's most basic transceiver but well worth outlaying a bit more for this model. Very happy with the purchase!

I have used the transceivers over the last few weeks and also used them to train novices. They have performed extremely well and are a pleasure to use. In tests they have proved very accurate and there are no problems to report. The harness is comfortable and well constructed and there is nothing I wouldn't recommend about this product.

I am a backcountry skier and I chose the Ortovox 3+ avalanche transceiver for its simplicity, price and comprehensive features. Very simple to use and understand, small enough to slip into a pocket but big enough to handle confidently in ski gloves with a good sized and clear lcd screen, I can only hope that I don't have to use it! The fact that it uses just one AA cell and will operate for up to 50 hrs on this tiny cell is a great bonus and it means that spare cells will not be too cumbersome! Highly recommended with no minus points!

Amazing Transceiver, I actually bought this thinking it has so many features, it will be great once I really got to know it! However both my kids 15 & 12 found it very simple to use? So much so they beat us adults hands down every time and we were using beeps that are very basic and simple to use on their first practice in the Avalanche park!

This is an excellent transceiver. It is very simple to use in both modes, runs on AA batteries and the firmware is upgradable. I did a lot of research before purchasing a transceiver and opted for this brand and model for pure ease of use and reliability. The unit itself is very comfortable and comes with a chest pouch/harness.

This is my first Transceiver and I have only played with it in the garden with other transceivers.

I have found it remarkably easy to use, very clear display, good size and fits well and comfy against the body. Features I really like are the multiple burial marker, very easy and also the fact it only takes one AA battery and therefore carrying a spare is no problem.

I will update if I have to use it in anger or after the Canadian Avi course I am booked on.
