Ortovox 240 Economic Probe

The Ortovox 240 Economic Probe though billed by Ortovox as a basic probe for beginners has one advantage over a lot of other probes, it's weight. At 200g this 240cm probe is light and exceptional value for money.

One extended and the screw fastener tightened you're ready to begin searching, and the graduated depth scale will help you determine how deep you are probing. A great choice for either the weight concious or those on a budget. .

A perfectly decent probe that looks like it will last well. Although it is plenty light, the 'every gram and cubic centimetre counts' enthusiasts will note that the sections are a bit thicker than many other models and therefore it takes up a bit more space. The assembly method is the tried and tested knotted cord in a notch type which is fine and of course gives the option to increase the tension in the cord should it stretch in the distant future. It's not quite as quick or secure as other methods such as that found on some Mammut probes to assemble, but it does come down quickly. I would mention that the male ends of the segments are just folded aluminium and are not coated in a low friction plastic or something and do have an open seam on them which means that when pulling the probe together it is a bit less smooth than more expensive models. The thickness of the probe can also be viewed as a good thing: for day to day 'how deep is the snow?' tests anything will do, but the added rigidity and strength offered by the sturdier construction boosts my confidence should I ever have to use it in an emergency in the scarily hard debris of an avalanche when lives could be at stake. That said, I would observe that the tip of the probe is quite a bit sharper than I have seen elsewhere. Whilst this should make it easier to insert the probe through hard snow, other tip designs with a more rounded profile do work very well and there is less risk of causing further damage to a buried casualty should the worst happen. Whilst rarely covered in avalanche safety courses, the adrenaline-fuelled, aggressive probing that would occur (and would be necessary with the hard debris) in the event of an avalanche emergency could easily lead to a victim being located and having a probe stabbed through their goggles at the same time. This is however my only qualm about this otherwise excellent value product. The alternate red and silver sections also allow very quick approximations of depth - a good move.
