Product Description:

The Ortovox 185 Long Sleeve Top is a midweight baselayer top designed for cold climates. The top features a lighter fabric under the arms for additional ventilation and comfort. This is a great top for skiing, ski touring and winter mountaineering.

Stu's Comment

I have used this top extensively, in autumn and winter it is easily my favourite baselayer. When the weather would normally call for a synthetic baselayer and a windshirt, I use an Ortovox 185 Merino Wool Baselayer. At first you don't feel like you have enough on but as soon as you get moving the wool regulates your temperature perfectly. The main advantage of using wool over 2 synthetic layers is the breathability especially for aerobic sports like running, biking ang climbing when the ambient temperature is low. If the windchill factor is significant I then use a windblocking vest with the wool baselayer to protect my core a little more but retain loads of breathability. I have also found that the Ortovox wool reatins it's shape and elasticity better than any other brand of wool I have tried.

The Advantages of Merino Wool

Ortovox make their baselayer garments out of 100% pure merino wool. This is the highest grade wool available and it offers a wealth of benefits over synthetic baselayers: it's very warm and cosy, it stays warm when damp or wet, it doesn't smell and it is easy to care for. In fact we rate merino wool so highly we've got a whole page to explain it's benefits.

Ortovox Baselayer Weights

Ortovox produce a range of merino wool baselayers designed to keep you comfortable whatever activity you're wearing it for. To do this they produce produce three separate ranges based on three different weight merino wool fabrics. The 130gsm (grams per square metre) fabric is ideal for high aerobic activities and warmer environments, it is incredibly light and breathable. The 185gsm fabric is warmer and more suited to cold weather hiking and ski touring. The 280gsm fabric makes for a wonderfully warm ski-touring or winter mountaineering baselayer which also makes a great midlayer in milder weather.

I purchased my first Ortovox 185 top two years ago for kayaking and it immediately became my "rash vest" of choice both for winter white water and summer surf kayaking. It's all I wear under my cag and it's all I need as even when wet it retains heat well.
I recently bought a second one for an 8 day skiing trip thinking that I'd be able to get away with wearing them for 4 days each. In fact the first got worn for 5 days but you'd never have known it. It looked, felt and smelt on the last day almost exactly the same as on the first. An excellent product.

I bought an Ortovox long sleeve top a couple of years ago. My job entails being indoors and then outdoors at short notice. With a lightweight fleece on top it is exceptional as I have never felt hot and clammy when I get back into the land of central heating. In severe cold I have worn a long sleeved silk top next to the skin under the Ortovox. It does not itch at all, unlike cheaper merino wool tops I have owned. It is also a useful piece of winter cycling kit.
On the downside it takes much longer to dry after washing than thermals made from artifical materials. Overall a fine item of kit, especially if you are outside in the British winter a lot.

This is the best base layer I have ever owned. I am a keen cyclist who commutes every day and needs something that is hard wearing stays dry and doesn't stink; this fits the bill.
The top keeps its shape really well, staying close to the skin thus maximising performance. It also has sleeves that don't ride up, important for a cyclist. I have used it several times a week for three winters and there is no sign of wear.
The top is very warm, for high intensity sport in mild weather you might want to go for the lighter weight version
