5 Ortlieb Back Roller Classic Review

My first Ortlieb panniers were Bike Packer Classic's. These are still going strong but recently after constant nagging now sit on the back of my daughters bike. These Back Roller's are very spacious perfect for touring, camping etc... The roll closure is quick to open and close operated by a single buckled strap which is very effective. Inside there is a zipped mess pocket and a side panel. There is a carry shoulder strap which can be simply attached if required. Again, I must stress these panniers can hold a lot of gear without any issues on the rack. Quality as expected from Ortlieb and a great service as always from Facewest.

After weeks of reading reviews (including one from a serious round the world touring cyclist who said don't buy Ortlieb; anything that goes in damp or wet will not only not dry but it will make everything else damp) I took the plunge. I'm delighted. It seems to me that for a lot of cyclists the key is to keep things dry in the first place.

If things do get wet from camping etc. it's only logical to separate those from dry clothing in their own waterproof stuffsack. A minor point for most people I'd have thought. My other concern was whether the Ortlieb QL 1 system would be up to the job (after all if it works why introduce QL2?). Another unfounded concern: it works both easily and well. All in all a great product.

These really are the gold standard for bike panniers.
I have completed a couple of thousand miles of fully loaded cycle touring with mine and they have never let me down. They are rugged, totally waterproof (I often have to leave them on the bike over night in the rain as my touring tent is a little cosy), and easy to fit.
They might seem expensive in comparison to other makes but in my experience well worth the extra.

Bought this set at the end of last year for my touring bike and they have proved to be absolutely brilliant.

As with anything from Ortlieb it is worth paying the extra money and for that you get a set which are durable, highly adjustable and most importantly completely dry. Also means you don't have to stop at the side of a busy road to pull over a cheap rain cover which will inevitably fail in its task. The mesh pocket and map slot inside are useful and they've seemed to put up very well with my continual abuse from putting too much weight in them. They also happen to be the easiest panniers to attach/detach ever, whilst being completely secure and come with lovely big reflective bits on the back.
