Mountain House Freeze Dried Food - Main Meals - Single Portions Review
Reviewer: Lisa Johnson, Newbrough, Hexham (12-5-2012)
Bought the spaghetti bolognese single portion to try as a potential for the GR 20 walk we are doing in August. Really impressed with the quantity of meal in packet. It was easy to rehydrate I would suggest a little more water than stated to make it more "saucy". Tasted really good is at the top of our list if we decided to take freeze- dried meals.

This is the first MH meal I've tried and I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the taste (Chicken Tikka). I find the wayfarer meals far better tasting but the shelf life of the MH products are a lot better. I'd only get these if I need something I need to store for emergencies and will stick to the wayfarer meals for camping.

Tried both the Spag Bol and the Chicken Tikka. Found both to be really good and certainly very enjoyable after a long day on the hill. The quantity of water is really critical and I would be tempted to add a little more water then instructed for the Spag Bol to make it a bit more "saucy". Overall great freeze-dried food!

This review is for the spaghetti bolognaise, a meaty, generous portion, great taste of meat, tomato and onion, much like a homemade bolognaise if I have any negative it would be that I added the stated amount of water and it could be a bit more sauce, maybe adding slightly more water if you like a saucy bolognaise, other than that a good meal.

I bought a lasagne pasta sauce meal, to just try every flavour, one at a time (gotta love that free posting) so I can have some meals scattered around in my car and motorcycle bag and house, that way I can have worry free food, that's withstands a lot of time stand around, don't forget to take out the little packet that comes in it, (almost put water in with it. For the taste I would say its pretty good, on par with the normal bag food that needs boiling, will continue to buy more to test more flavours since this review promo is very handful.

Mountain House Freeze Dried Food - Main Meals - Single Portions Review
Reviewer: Mark, Staffs (5-11-2011)
We took a few Mountain House meals on holiday with us to North Wales on a recent camping trip, our first time camping with our young children. To our surprise we found them much tastier than other freeze dried meals we'd taken to Nepal a few years ago. The Vegetable Tikka with Rice was a particular favourite, filling and packed with some real heat for curry lovers. At the end of a long day at the beach or out walking it was great to know that just by boiling a pan of water and adding it to one of these meals we'd have something filling and tasty for tea without having to try too hard.

I tried these on the strength of reviews on YouTube, but UK people need to be aware that what you get here is not the US version made by Oregon Freeze Dry, but is produced in the UK by European Freeze Dry, who are owned by OFD. The range is therefore somewhat limited compared to the US.
The foil packet is robust but easy to open, and has a shelf life of about 5 years, so I will be keeping a few in for emergencies. The packets are really lightweight, around 125 grams, but supply enough calories, about 500 to 600 to keep you going. The packet looks oversized, but this is to make room for the water, and the packet re-seals really well. The ingredients listed are just like you would cook them at home, too. When you tear open the packet, the contents doesn’t look much, but when you add the boiling water, the smell leaps out at you! Having waited 9 or 10 minutes the texture has changed, you can tell its origin, but only just, and the taste is excellent. Take a long spoon to get into the corners!
There are a couple of minor downsides. You need to measure out exactly 350ml of water, not so easy unless you have a marked bottle or pan prepared. In the 10 minutes you wait for the food to re-constitute, the packet could get cold if you leave it out, so wrap it up in something like a cosy. I used bubble wrap as suggested by another reviewer.
In summary an excellent product.

Pasta/lasagna sauce meal - as long as you carefully measure the boiling water you have an excellent meal for one. No mess tins to tidy away just an empty bag to carry of the hills with you. Its better than some of the meals my girlfriend has made me, not sure that’s a recommendation or not .... No need to add any salt/pepper or chilli flakes, good enough without it.

I bought the mountain house chilli con carne with rice and it has a very good taste better than the Reiters chilli were the kidney beans tasted like bullets. I would highly recommend the mountain house chilli with rice.
