Tried the mixed fruit and custard,, tasted good, adequate amount for single portion. Only lost points because it didn't look yummy.

My wife and I are experienced hill walkers and despite the fact that we are both nearly 70 we still set of for the hills. We are going from Fort William to Cape Wrath in 2 weeks time. We keep our rucksack weigh down to a minimum but still need 3200kcal/day for hillwalking. We have used several makes of freeze dried food but always come back to Mountain House because of the quality and taste.

When you arrive arrive at a campsite in the Highlands of Scotland feeling a bit weary you need something that is quick and easy. We use a Main Course and a dessert as the meal in the evening. The desserts are are nice and sweet and the custard has got cream in it which makes a a very welcome taste.

It is not cheap but neither is a meal in a pub. But keeping the weight down is essential if you need to carry, say , 5 days food which is 5 kg/person. Wayfarer is no good because of the weight(it includes the water) and some Army Rations are also heavy because of the water included in the meals. The best compromise is to at least plan your main evening meal to be Mountain House and use other foods for the rest of the day.

I would recommend Mountain House desserts because if their weight, calorific value and taste. The price is worth it.

I tried all the deserts and the custard and apple was my favourite. Easy to make and actually tasted of custard and apple which was a bonus. Nice and sweet , I ate it hot although it could be eaten cold if wanted to or had to.

I purchased the porridge and was pleased by it. Rather wrongly listed as a dessert I got several for a recent multi-day Munroes trip. Easy to prepare (just add 350 ml boiling water) it provided a very tasty breakfast. Only grumble is calorie content around 500 plus, MH's competitors can squeeze 300 more in for their breakfasts. Having said that a good buy and if it were not for the slight deficit in energy I would score it 5 stars for ease of preparation and taste
