Mountain Equipment G2 Ultimate Mountain Pant Review

These pants are the usual quality you expect from ME and they don't disappoint ;) I am a 32 waist but had to get a large as there are on the small on there sizes as per another report I read. The braces are a good fit and good sized ;) these stand up to most of what the winter weather can produce in Scotland :) wore for 2 weeks and there never missed a beat ! Very pleased with them ;)

I like the design of the knees for easy movement. The cut is quite narrow, which is not ideal for hooking up with the crampons. They are comfortable, lightweight and breathable. They are not very resistant to water, but if you're climbing on snow or ice starts to rain, it's time to leave. You should not be there with these pants or with others. Depending on how cold it gets, you can put underneath a thin base layer, fleece pants, or both.
I want to emphasize the freedom of movement you get these pants G2 compared with a classic hard shell, which forces you to move like a clumsy robot and you have to work harder with your legs. If I'm not going to the Himalayas or the North Pole, I think I will not use the hard shell. With the G2 you can go elsewhere.

I purchased a pair of G2 ultimate mountain pants back in May before a trip to the Alps, I used them throughout the trip including on summit day on Mt Blanc. I found them exceptionally warm and almost completely windproof, with good freedom of movement even when climbing. The internal snow gaiter works better than any other I have used and is easy to attach.
The material itself is thick and tough and but very comfortable and shed alpine snow and ice without problems. I can't wait to try these trousers skiing this winter. However these are very definitely a winter or altitude pair of trousers. I used them in Snowdonia in august despite being in terrible rain and wind, which they dealt with admirably, they were however far to warm. Buy these trousers if you want the ultimate softshell for winter conditions!!

I bought these as an all-rounder, mainly to for summer Alpine climbing, but also for winter wear (climbing and skiing).
For a week in the Alps, I wore them every day (including the approach), however, it must be noted that the fabric is thick – they get very warm! Being Windstopper fabric too, a nice glacial breeze does little to cool you down.
The 2 venting thigh pockets are of little use at doing their job as they are far too small, but this is a minor issue. Apart form the venting pockets; the design can’t really be faulted.
The internal gaiter works a treat (even on leather boots), and the crampon patch is as good as wearing an outer gaiter to protect the pant leg. The waist is a little on the small side, so I’d recommend getting a size bigger than you normally would (especially if you are planning on tucking base/mid layers in), and it also might be worth mentioning that they are quite baggy around the leg (but this didn’t affect movement in my experience).
The price is certainly something to consider, as you can get an adequate soft shell for a fraction of the price. However, if you are intending multiple trips in different weather conditions, then these are for you. I am confident they will perform in all environments, enabling you to have just the one soft shell in your kit bag.
