The Saturn Crash Pad is the largest in the Moon Climbing series, a pretty huge bouldering mat. Measuring 160 x 120 x 11cm you would have to try NOT to land on it. 11cm of foam made from two layers of different densities make for massive impact absorption and durability.
The Saturn folds burrito style (no hinge) which means no weak spot for you to land or trip on, and it always remains flat at all times. The Saturn has briefcase handles along one edge to help move it from problem to problem, it has rucksack straps to carry it long distances and fastens shut with 2 anodised aluminium hooks. An advantage of the burrito system is that when folded the damp dirty surface of the map is on the inside not on your back. When not in use the rucksack straps are concealed under a large flap which velcros down. The flap also has a small zipped pocket for essentials.

MoonClimbing Saturn Crash Pad Review

Have been using this mat for a few weeks now and first impressions are positive!
Loads of nice deep cosy foam to land on and even when laid over stones etc the foam is deep enough so you don’t notice them.
The finish is strong and tough and has so far gone unscathed even when being dragged across limestone and the fact there is no hinge means that I’m filled with confidence when landing feet first.
Generally a brilliant item, but a bit weighty.

There are many benefits of a big mat to fall on but then there are down sides where you need to make compromises. Which are the size and how you move it about it, makes a bigger area where wind can catch you and knock you off balance. But that’s the down side. Many positives including the big foot mat to wipe your shoes and stop them getting covered in mud and wet. It has no hinge, one solid sheet of foam and both layers combined makes for a awesome bouldering mat and a good sized bed for the night.

I bought for all my winter bouldering activities. There are a few features which really make this pad one of my favourites.
The first is the hinge, which as its supposed to, has saved my ankles once or twice. The other benefit is the humungous size of it. This is perfect if you travel by large car or van, but a little harder with a small car or if you’re on public transport.
The price is pretty hefty, but once you’ve got one, it will last for years, and you can always replace the foam if and when anyway. Definitely worth the purchase.

Having already tried bouldering with a Phud and a Satalite pad, I decided to invest in a moon Saturn crash pad.
The Saturn is burrito hinged, and makes falling on much easier, as I have sprained my ankle a fair few times falling in the gap on a hinged pad. However, coming in at 160 x 120cm makes it a pain to transport, and on buses and trains this is a real problem. But it covers the ground well, and makes a much bigger target when halfway up a highball.
