Marmot Spire Pant Review
Reviewer: IOANNIS KALAMPOUKAS, SIATISTA (28-1-2011)
Lightweight pants, good-looking, comfortable, not so bulky. Work well in strong winds. I used to wear them, over a pair of Mountain Equipment Powerstretch Tights, you can go anywhere! But as with all Gore-Tex pants, be careful with your crampons. You can easily damage these pants, so if you plan to use these, get a pair of strong gaiters. Believe me, it’s a pity to damage this really special (and expensive) product! I also like the full length size zips, they are easy to put it on over mountain boots and to control the body temperature when needed. Trusty and strong suspenders.

These trousers were bought to replace my old faithful Marmot Randonee Pants, which are sadly(!) not available in the UK anymore. The Spire pant have been a good replacement for the multiple uses I put them too. Already they have worked well as ski touring trousers in Scottish winter conditions (in the Pentlands and on Cairngorm). In addition, they have used successfully for winter walking in Glen Shiel and on Skye. As a spare layer in your pack they go on nice and easily with the full length side zips making for easy putting on, on a windy hill day.
On the negative side the snow gaiters are on the large side especially for walking/mountaineering boots. However, a few stitches has quickly sorted this problem out.

Marmot Spire Pant Review

I bought this pant to replace some 10 year old North Face pants which were bulky and leaky. So far I'm really happy with them. They're lightweight, un-restrictive and comfortable and the full-length zips on each side provide excellent ventilation on hot days or when skinning.
The 3-layer Gore-tex, snow gaiters and seam-taping ensures full protection from snow and rain and the 3 pockets, though relatively small, are conveniently placed and feature water-resistant zips. The only drawback is the lack of reinforcement in high wear areas to protect from things like crampons and ski edges but as a lightweight, storm proof pant for skiing and touring they're really good value.
