The Marmot ROM jacket offers the mountain enthusiast a Range Of Motion, allowing you to move freely with superb protection from the elements by using Gore Windstopper in the main body. Whilst the side and under arm panels are a lighter Marmot m2 softshell, providing breathability and temperature regulation as you work hard climbing, trekking or skiing in cooler conditions.
Windstopper is designed to stop those cutting winds, this is achieved by putting a membrane into the fabric, making it virtually waterproof. However the seams are not taped so the worst of the rain will get through. But until you really need that hard shell just pull the quick adjust helmet compatible hood up and enjoy the climbing.
The ROM is a great mountaineering softshell offering a good level of breathability whilst keeping the wind out. The stretch fabric allows for excellent manoeuvrability, which is what the climber needs when the going gets tough.

They say that this garment does not stand much water, but if you try under the tap in the bathroom, your arm does not get wet. The light rain is not a problem. Nobody needs a softshell for summer. You go dressed in a shirt or something very light and if it rains your in for a hardshell backpack.
A garment as ROM Marmot Jacket is designed for alpine climbing. You need protection from wind and snow. You also need to go light and you need freedom of motion and also do not want to end up drenched in your own sweat. All this gives it the Marmot jacket ROM. Not protect you from an Amazon rain, but it is not you going to bring to Brazil.
I recently bought a hard shell, but I will use it only in summer and fall hikes. On the other hand, the hood is very well designed and can be worn under the helmet. The only fault I find is its cut a bit wide in the torso. I wish it were more accurate.
