The Mammut Trion Light 38+ is a lightweight year round mountaineering pack suitable for pretty much any climbing or skiing mission. With its short back length (55cm) and removable lid, complete with internal and external pockets, to save weight and make looking up when climbing easier. When the lid is removed the top can still be kept secure with a roll top closure and strap which can also be used to secure a rope. Made from 100D Nylon Cordura Dobby Ripstop it's reasonably tough for a lightweight pack and the base fabric is 210D Nylon Full Dull Hitra fabric bottom for more durability.
The back system is made from 3-D EVA foam with air channels for excellent ventilation, both the straps and waist belt are padded for comfort over long days. The T-frame which supports the back can be removed to increase flexibility and save weight, the hip belt padding can also be removed giving a completely stripped down weight of just 630g. It also features an easily accessible front compartment designed for your ski touring safety gear.

I bought this backpack for a future mountaineering trip but have been using it mostly to carry my rock climbing gear. I wanted a light backpack, at about 40 L, that would also be durable, i.e., withstand the occasional brush with rock and being somewhat tossed around. While I admit I have been more careful than usual, the backpack seems sturdy enough.
My greatest fear was that with its light weight and thin fabric it would start tearing, but so far so good: it doesn't look pristine, of course, but the few scuffs don't look like anything serious and the pack really does seem to be much more resistant than it looks. It is quite comfortable for a lightweight backpack, thanks to the generous padding on the back, and quite stable when filled up almost to the brim. I don't know how comfortable it would be for multi-hour walks, but it has never failed me during hikes to the crag or while shuffling through the rocks.
The roll-top closure was strange to me at first, but I've become a fan. In terms of storage it packs more than it looks. The fact that there is only one attachment point to the top flap makes it a bit awkward when the front pocket is full, i.e. it seems to skew a bit, but this is not a deal breaker. Overall I'm quite happy with this backpack and although I still have to try it out on the mountain with ice axes attached and so on, I'm fairly confident it will perform brilliantly.
