The MSR Piezo Ignitor is a small ignitor that will work with virtually all gas cannister stoves, with the exception of the MSR Reactor and other radiant burner type stoves. The element is housed in a protective tube, so works more reliably in windy conditions. The tube also collects a small amount of gas vapour to aid in ignition.
The Piezo Ignitor has previously been available with the MicroRocket stove, but is now available as an individual item for use with other stoves.

The MSR Piezo Ignitor is a useful bit of kit for lighting stoves that lack a built-in ignitor of their own. However, I wouldn't rely on it without a back-up. I carry matches and a Bic lighter in my rucksack at all times, but I found the Piezo ignitor to be much more convenient. Having said that, it took four or five clicks before the stove lit, but to be fair I was out on an open snowy moor with very little shelter from the wind. As it's an electronic gadget, make sure it is kept dry by keeping it in a small plastic bag when not in use.
I was impressed with the prompt and efficient service coupled with good value for money while the ignitor is a better and more compact alternative to a standard lighter or matches in lighting a camping stove with no weight penalty. So, excellence all round really!
The MSR Piezo Ignitor is super lightweight and small in size. I find it much easier and safer to use than a lighter to get my gas stove going and the great thing is that it works when it is wet, with no fuel to run out, as with a lighter or batteries to replace.
It takes a little getting used to, in that the ignitor ideally needs to be held at an angle near to the burner to allow it to fill with gas before pressing the ignitor. I had problems getting it to work at first consistently, but now I've figured out the method, it works fine, every time.
Durable and robust - Recommended.
A fine idea, fractionally let down only by its compact nature and, as noted elsewhere, the failure to provide any means of attachment or retention, just the attachment point. I keep mine in a used nuun tube to ensure it remains dry and protected, as well as easy to identify and locate in the pocket of a rucksack.
Having most recently used mine to start a stove for melting snow at a modest altitude, Iím very happy to have a more reliable mechanism available to me than repeatedly rolling greasy, damp or frozen fingers over the manual controls of a standard lighter or running through a stock of matches in conditions which dictate less dexterity than usual.
I bought the piezo ignitor in order to stop burning my fingers every time I light a gas stove. Job done, it works perfectly. I also use it to light my alcohol stove, it's a bit trickier as you need to allow a bit of fume build up for a few seconds but click on it and it lights up. As already mentioned in another review, it would be nice to have a lanyard/piece of string attached to it as it's pretty small and easily lost.
All in all super happy as it weighs slightly less than a mini bic lighter but it won't run out.
I bought three of the these piezo ignitors, and I'm not disappointed. There are very small and light, easy to use even with gloves, and seem to function very well. I have not used it in freezing temperatures, just in the fall season. I use them with the gas stove in the house, as well as my camping kitchens. My girlfriend actually took one since she liked it so much. A bit on the expensive side, but a quality product. The only negative point is that they may be easy to misplace. I suggest you use the same kind of neck band that some people use for their cell phone.
I purchased the MSR Piezo Ignitor as a replacement for traditional gas lighter which causes a lot of trouble especially when it gets wet or the temperature drops. This ignitor is not cheap but it does a very good job. It is very light, does not need refilling and can be manipulated using gloves. Being very compact, it fits very well in the burner's case. I do recommend.
I purchased the MSR piezo igniter as a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative to lighting my gas stove. It requires no refuelling and does not have any bi product of it's use.
At eight pounds it is a touch expensive for what it is but; considering it's expected lifespan you could easily spend as much, if not more, on matches or gas lighters.
In use, the igniter performs admirably, unhindered by wind, or indeed, wet conditions(in my experience up to now, lighting the stove first time, every time).
A minor negative is that MSR have seen fit to mould a small eyelet into the grip so as to secure a lanyard but; have decided not to supply one with the igniter. A small point, granted, but it would be better to have the option to take it off rather than try and find one to put on.
The igniter fits neatly in the case with my MSR pocket rocket so as it doesn't get lost and has, thus far, worked faultlessly.
I'm pleased with the purchase and happy to recommend.
