The MSR Miox Water Purifier was developed in conjunction with the US military. The MIOX is a small handheld purifying system that is lightweight, simple and reliable. Using only rock salt, water and electricity it prepares a mixed oxidents solution (MIOX).

This solution is added to a known quantity of water that needs to be purified. Up to 4 litres acn be purified with each solution. The water is then left to dwell, so the bugs and viruses can be sterilised. Dwell times are 30 mins for bacteria and giardia, up to 4 hours for Crytosporidium. The MSR Miox is powered by 2 x CR123 3V batteries which will purify approx 200 litres of water.

Since the MIOX uses only rock salt and camera batteries it is easy to replenish and virtually maintenance free. No cleaning, scrubbing or pumping. The MIOX also uses safety test strips so you can verify that your water is safe to drink.

It's a bit hard to tell from the image but the MIOX is actually the size of a fat marker pen, the lower image shows the MIOX next to MSR Waterworks filter and an adult hand so you can get an idea of scale.

Remember that the MSR MIOX is a purifier not a filter, so the water will be bug free but will be the same colour and contain the same sediment that it had before treatment. Please read How to Choose a Water Filter for more information
