Tinder Dust is shavings from Maya Pinewood packed in a convenient water proof tin that is easy to carry in your pocket or backpack. Gives maximum heat energy for minimal weight. Use Tinder Dust together with our Swedish FireSteel to light your campfire with ease.

I was hoping that the tin it came in was made of metal but it is a very thin plastic, the tin of maya tinder dust is smaller than I expected. When compared to dryer lint or cotton wool balls with a small amount of Vaseline the maya dust is not as good - it still works (lights) but it is a little more effort to light. You also have to make sure you have a wind break in place as it is so fine that the shavings they will blow away. Light my fire state they are 80% resin content and are made from Stumps from Pinus Montezumae, or a fatwood tree. I think they are just treated pine shavings as they are very light in color to be from Stumps from Pinus Montezumae. They are very light - you could get rid of the plastic box and put them in a zip lock bag to cut the weight down. I do not think they are worth £5.
Guys I've gotta say this stuff is awesome! If any of you out there know that 'birch bark' burns extremely well, even in the wet, due to the flamable resin inside the bark, then try this stuff...it's WAY better! I was shocked to see just how well it caught a flame, and if you use a generous amount, it'll hold a flame for a decent amount of time too, giving you enough time to stoke it up a little and aggravate the flame. I actually purchased this to only see the comparison from the birch bark I always use, to this, and it really is a handy little tub to keep in your pack for emergencies or to use on a regular basis. Only thing I'd like to see is a larger tub option as it is a tad tiny, but good things come in small packages so don't let size put you off!
I've only heard good things about Maya dust so had to give it a go and was really surprised exactly how good it was. With good tinder choice it works fantastically well especially in combination with the Maya sticks. Takes a spark from a flint really well and is quick to catch, my speediest fires are always with one of both of the Maya products. Has thankfully reduced the stress of getting a fire going in less than ideal conditions. Comes in a nice reusable pot too.
A friend showed me this stuff while we were camping a few weeks ago. We managed to get a fire going very quickly with just damp wood and some Maya Dust. As with all fires, it helps if you've split the wood first. Don't count on this to get a fire going every time though, as there is no substitute for practice. It's light enough to bring with you every time you'll want a fire, and the case keeps it very dry despite my bag pocket getting absolutely soaked. You don't need very much of it at all, so it should last a fair while. I really think it's great value for money and something I will always carry with me on future trips.
