Meribel

Val Thorens
Les Menuires

The definitive guide to the area.

The Three Valleys is the name given to a group of four well-known ski-resorts: Méribel, Courchevel, Les Menuires, and Val Thorens, which is the highest resort in Europe (2200m). There, off-piste skiing still retains a character of friendly secrecy, and you don't necessarily have to rise before dawn to make your own track in virgin snow.

In English and French.

Have used this guide to good effect 9 times, the accuracy of the detailed routes is of a very high standard. I think a few of the route ratings err on the side of caution, as with others in the range the photos suffer for the size of the book but still manages to get the info across in a susinct way, no doubt the best route guide I've so far used.

I've used this guide quite extensively over a few visits to the area and, overall, it's pretty good. The production is of higher quality than the previous generation of Vamos off-piste guides and I think the descriptions (or in some cases the translations) are generally more accurate.
It makes limited use of colour photos but this is generally just eye candy with the vast majority of the routes using black and white photos or diagrams.
Beware however, some of the itineraries should definitely be checked with the pisteurs; a few routes that enter the Vanoise national park are tolerated exceptions to a general ban but I'm not sure this extends to all of those described in the book. Also, the avalanche risk in the Creux / Chanrossa area used to be reduced by frequent blasting but this has changed over the years. Givois' 'coffee table' guide to the area is more up to date and urges caution in this bowl.
Ultimately all guidebooks get outdated, conditions change, new lifts get installed - used wisely, this guide will still help you to get a lot more out of a visit to the 3 Valleys.

This guide is an excellent resource and can’t be beaten for the area. Although it contains all the basic safety info, it goes without saying you should use this with the correct knowledge. I met up with someone in the resort and we managed to quickly pick a route based on the weather, time available and commitment we wanted which was ideal. A bit of everything’s covered – from easy, low commitment routes to true backcountry adventures out of sight of anything and anyone. The guide states whether each route is more suited to skiers or boarders, an approximate level, the best time of the season, dangers, commitment and whether its in or out of sight of the main lifts. Don’t leave the piste without it – it could save a lot of mishaps.
