The Expedition Foods Main Meals 800kcal are, as the name suggests, freeze dried main meals with at least 800 calories per serving! Expedition Foods provides very high quality meals in convenient packages. Whether you're on an overnight hike, a month-long expedition or a fast moving adventure race, having quick and easy to prepare lightweight and nutritious food is essential.
Expedition Foods are quick and easy to prepare. Just remove the oxygen absorber sachet, add hot water to the line (cold water can be used but will take longer to rehydrate), stir, close the packet and wait 5-8 minutes.

Beef and potato hot pot. Vegetables tasteless, with curious mushy/rubbery texture. I've tried this meal twice before, using different amounts of water and rehydrating times, thinking I was not getting the preparation right. A third time with the same horrible result, so I'll not be buying this again. A pity as the other meals in this range are very tasty.
Took 2 Tikka Masala for a 2 night wild camp in Scotland. Simple to prepare, rip off top, take oxygen pack out and fill up to the line with hot water, stir, close, wait and then eat. Tasty.
Good quality as far as freeze drying goes. With an expiry date of 2020 it doesn't matter if you don't end up eating it on a trip but essential backup
I bought several of these meals for use on an 11 day backpack across mid-Wales. Using a JetBoil stove and therefore requiring AFD meals meant that all the main meals were bought up front. Weight and pack size were therefore very important, as well as the kcal count. In order to reduce pack weight, these 800 kcal meals were split between two people. Although this means that you have to carry a bowl, rather than eating staright out of the bag, the weight saving is substantial on a long trip. I have used Mountain House meals for many years and these Expedition Foods meals compare very favourably with this brand. They rehydrate well and there is no problem with dry bits lurking in the bottom corners of the bag, since the bag is so well designed. They also have good taste and texture and were filling enough as a main meal between a cup-a-soup and a hot chocolate. Just as good as the Mountain House large meals (which are not actually twice as big as the standard, you should note), and coming in about £1 cheaper they represent good value for money. The meals with rice as the carbohydrate seemed to be the best. Those that were supposed to be spicy did have a good kick and that is welcome as often AFD meals can be a bit bland. I will certainly be using these meals again.
After being disappointed with dried food from the 70s/80s (ie pot & super noodles / vesta) I switched to wet food in sachets but found them heavy. I revisited dried food by trying this (spag bol and veg tikka). Amazing difference. The spag bol tastes great and you really feel full after eating it (unlike the previously mentioned food). Like that you prep the meal in the bag so no washing up and it only takes 10 mins . Will be taking some on every trip in future.
The best lightweight freeze dried meal I've found. A bit costly but worth every penny when you're cold and wet!!
I purchased a number of these for a recent trip in Iceland. Calorie intake was my main concern, hence buying these based on their 800kcal contents. They don't taste like most freeze dried meals, which are just about passable, but actually more like a decent tasty meal. Both me and my friend agreed that the Chicken Korma was a firm favourite amongst the many flavours. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. 800Kcal's in 180g, you can't go wrong.
I have had several of these meals already, this particular one has gone into storage, but form my experience, unless you prefer the taste of warm cardboard, I'd recommend getting this brand of dehydrated food. They are tasty and filling, and there's plenty of choice. Easy to use packaging, with markings for water levels. All very convenient and nourishing. I do find the spicy ones a little hot, but I am a self admitted Korma Queen. So you might want to take note if you have a delicate palate.
Expedition Foods Spaghetti bolognaise is far and away the best dried main meal I have ever bought. I use them for mountain marathon events and they are ideal for this. A lot of dried main meals are tasteless and don't reconstitute that well but not this one. It is full of flavour, dead easy to use and very filling, exactly what you need after a long day on the hills. I really can't fault it and when it comes to mountain marathons , this is the meal I always go for now.
For the past few years I have purchased Mountain House main meals for my backpacking treks and I have been happy with them. However, comparing notes with a fellow backpacker at a Bothy, she recommended that I should try the Expedition Meals. So on my latest trek I tried their Spaghetto Bolognese and Chicken Tikka meals. I was very impressed with both, which were flavorsome and filling, and I believe spicier than the Mountain House meals. The meals themselves don't look particularly appealing, but eating them from package that isnít an issue, but a long spoon is essential if you want to have clean fingers afterwards. The sizes of the meals were ideal for me, being slightly smaller that the Mountain House big pack size. I usually skip lunch when walking so I need a filling meal at the end of the day. Anyway to cut to the chase the Expedition Main Meals are the best freeze-dried meals I have tried and will be my first choice from now on. That said I was not so keen on their Breakfast Meals.
