Exped Downmat 9 DLX
£120.00
The Exped Down sleeping mats are
a revolution to camping. The Down mats are thicker than normal self inflating
mats e.g. Thermarests but slimmer than an air bed. Instead of being foam filled
like a thermarest they contain down feathers. Scientific tests (details below)
have shown these mats to be 3 times warmer than a self inflating mat of the same
weight. The down mats also pack up smaller than other mats as you only have to
compress the feathers and not the foam. Rather than carry a heavy, bulky sleeping
bag, upgrade your sleeping mat to a Down Air Mat. The stuff sack is used to inflate
the mat and then doubles as an inflatable pillow. Thickness - 9cm Length
- 198cm Width - 66cm
Weight Mat+Sack - 1260 +190g
Packed Size - 28 x 18cm
This DLX model
of the Downmat 9 is the same thichness but longer and wider
for extra comfort
Two wide mouth valves ensure fast inflation and simple deflation.
Just one quarter turn closes the valve.
Similar to a sleeping bag, baffles between the mats‘
chambers eliminate cold spots and promote a stable and supportive
air cushion.
Light foam blocks at the mat‘s ends prevent down from
escaping or migrating between chambers.
Laminated polyester fabric is both durable and airtight. Top
surface of honeycomb textured fabric provides superior slip
resistance and comfort next to the skin. Seams and valves
are all high-frequency welded (most secure method of fusing
fabrics and materials) to ensure mat integrity. Dark colors
dry quickly.
For use as a pillow, 2 loops at head end can be used to secure
the packsack to the mat.
Light and warm: According to EMPA‘s test (SOP00749) the
9 cm Downmats offer a heat resistance value of 1.6. At about
the same weight, a standard 2.5 cm self inflating mat offers
a value of 0.5, or, just 1/3 that of the Downmat! Further
EMPA tests demonstrated that regular mats lose 3x more heat
to cold ground than to the air. The conclusion: use a lighter
weight sleeping bag with a Downmat to achieve consistent overall
comfort, and still reduce weight and bulk!
Exped uses only IDFL-certified, 700 in3/oz goose down, treated
with Nocar to eliminate the effects of humidity that may reach
the mat‘s interior.
Unsure if this is the right mat for you?

to Exped in recognition of the Downmat's superb performance and overall value.

We purchased 2 of these mats to do the West Highland Way in May 2007. They were expensive but you definately get what you pay for! We used them with our 2-season sleeping bags and remained comfy and cosy every night we camped out - our walking friends experienced a very chilly first night with their bog standard air matress! The downmat 9 DLX does pack down to a remarkably small size and the weight is quite acceptable for what you are getting in terms of surface area and performance. Weight was not too great an issue for us as we cheated by having our bags transported to all of our stops! Had we been carrying our own equipment, we would definately have chosen the smaller downmats. The only real negative was that the storage bag which is used to inflate the downmat disconnects very easily if you are trying to inflate it in a confined space i.e. in a small tent (whilst dodging the worst 2 things about Scotland - rain and the mighty midge!) There are however, a number of solutions to this - bigger tent, smaller downmat or exped have come up with a few solutions of their own including a foot pump/pillow which I will definately invest in before my next camping trip!
