Dakine Heli Pro DLX 20L Review

I bought this pack because I wanted a good practical pack for skiing, which could double up for hand luggage on flights too (my previous one had a metal frame making it too cumbersome). It's a great pack: Carries shovel, probe, water, spare clothing easily. I haven't tried carrying skis on it yet. Only thing that would improve it would be a smaller internal pocket for holding money, phone or other small items. Otherwise, recommended!

I bought this pack as a replacement to my old backpack that just wasn't up to the task anymore. This bag couldn't perform better. It fits everything that you need for a day of off-piste skiing, plenty of room for shovel blade and probe in the front pocket with a drainage hole for the snow melt. The shovel handle fits securely on the outside of the bag leaving the rest of the bag for other essentials.
Dakine do mention A-Frame ski mounting on their website however this is not possible with this pack, the cross mounting though is perfect.
The material used and zipper quality mean that this pack will last. Although it lacks any small inner pockets it certainly does the job on every other front. A great bag, well worth the money.

I bought this pack for skiing off piste, after I ran out of capacity in my Dakine Heli Pack. My 4 year old Heli pack struggles to cope with 3 litre hydration bladder and the tools of off piste skiing.
The main compartment contains the hydration bladder sleeve, and plenty of space for spare clothes, first aid kit, probe etc. The secondary compartment is designed for your snow shovel blade, but is large enough for other items as well. This pocket also includes a drainage hole, so melting snow can escape.
The lined goggle pocket does its function, and easily takes a spare pair of goggles. The water bottle pocket is probably of little use for carrying water as it will freeze pretty quickly. However, the waterproof waist strap pocket is very useful, for your mobile, and in even includes a key clip so you don't lose your keys.
The only real negatives are the pack weight and bulk when sitting on chair lifts. But then again, its very well built and you cannot have the carrying capacity in a small pack. But I am also not sure of the claimed 20L capacity. The pack would be like a balloon on your back, with that much stuff in it.
