Blizzard Survival Bag
£29.00
The Blizzard survival bag is widely recognised as the industry standard survival bag. Using Reflexcell Technology ™(see below for more details) the Blizzard bag is nearly twice as warm per weight as a down sleeping bag. In fact the Blizzard Survival Bag is so good it can easily be used for a 2/3 season sleeping bag. The top can be closed with the drawcord to form a hood and the bag is completely wind and waterproof. Its tiny pack size and high performance make it ideal for emergency use and the kind of thing everyone should have in their pack. Tested and used by the British and US forces. The Royal Marines found it 4 times more effective than the current UK issue survival bag. The Blizzard products are also re useable and have no shelf life, vacuum packed when new, but once used they can be repacked into the nylon case (spare part) to be only slightly larger then when vacuumed packed. Every group leader, hiker, biker and military person who goes out should have a survival bag in their kit and with Blizzard you can have the best.

Reflexcell Technology ™
The idea of Reflexcell™ was conceived 15 years ago when the founder and managing director of Blizzard Survival, Derek Ryden, realized that outdoor enthusiasts and professionals needed something more effective than plastic bivvy bags and lighter than conventional sleeping bags.
Reflexcell is a triple layer corrugated foil blanket that combines the foil's heat reflecting properties with the insulation of the trapped air to produce a foil blanket/sleeping bag hybrid. Reflexcell™, is a super-lightweight material that provides unprecedented thermal performance in the most demanding conditions.

Blizzard Survival Bag Review
Reviewer: Krzysztof Jan Saternus, Sidmouth (5-1-2011)
I purchased it for my mountain expeditions, but I want to use it only in case of emergency. And in my opinion it is very good choice, because it is really lightweight. And really small, so there is no problem to keep it in your bag.
However if you want to use it, like me, only in case of emergency, don’t open it after buying, because it can be a problem to make it as small as before opening. I wanted to try it and I slept inside it on the seashore whilst the temperature was about 0 degrees. Nice thing for surviving in case of an accident or just if you can't fall asleep in your sleeping bag because of temperature.

Finally plucked up the courage and tested the blizzard bag. I bought it with the intention of using for overnight treks; however after having it for over a year I had not used it other than carrying it for emergencies.
First thing to say is that I got into it Friday night and crawled out alive Saturday morning so that it self could be considered a success. Reviews spoke about both it being noisy and getting saturated; it did rustle a bit but not enough to disturb my sleep. I did get damp in the bag but as soon a I got out of the bag in the morning it wasn't noticeable and the modern clothing dried quickly. On the whole it was ok warmth although I slept in my clothes (base layer plus midlayer) I did wake up cold on a couple of occasions but a bit of moving my limbs warmed me up. It is certainly warmer than my one season sleeping bag.
For me it is a clear trade off saving weight but losing some comfort. At the end of the day it is a bivy bag not a sleeping bag, but I would use it again with confidence for any future overnighters.

Again I initially got this for the Polaris as it doubles up as your sleeping bag/emergency bag thus reducing even more weight. It is surprisingly warm and I even survived a relatively painless night in a single skin tent at -7c. The only downside is that it never packs down quite as small after you have first used it and the noisy rustling that accompanies your every move when inside it. Be warned camp well away from other competitors or face their wrath in the morning.

The Blizzard bag in my honest opinion is one of the best technical innovations I have seen in the outdoor industry as of late.
Weighing in at less than 400g it serves the same purpose as a bivvy bag and summer weight sleeping bag for well over half the weight and at whole lot cheaper.
The blizzard bag does suffer from some breathability issues and I would not fancy sleeping in one as its noisy as hell and sound like 20 people opening packets of crisps, if you where to sleep in this then I would highly recommend you pack ear plugs.
Bottom line this piece of kit could save your life. I own two of them and always have one in the car. For winter I carry one with a Terra Nova Supelite Bothy 2 and they make a great combination.

I have used mine for mountain marathons and on mountain rescue exercises.
They keep you toasty warm all night however the price to pay especially on a warmer damp day is lots of condensation inside the bag when you wake.
You can get them as wet as you like and they still stay warm something than cannot be said for many insulating materials.
I advise that you use them with a traditional orange bivy bag on the outside. This protects the blizzard bag and also makes them even warmer.
Though initially packed very small and compact they easily open up and once used can be packed back into a fairly small bag.
Blizzard bags are really warm and useful for many situations.
