The Black Diamond Iron Cruiser Via Ferrata Set is an all-in-one shock absorption kit for use on Via Ferratas and fixed lines. It combines two specially designed carabiners with Black Diamond's Screamer-style EAS shock absorber. This is a great solution for those who don't want the complexity and bulk of a kinetic shock absorber. This is ideal for first time users of via ferratas as it is as simple to use as it comes.

Iron Cruiser Crabs:

The Black Diamond Iron Cruiser Crabs are sliding sleeve style via ferrata crab. These are unlocked easily when you grab the crab as your finger rests on the sleeve but as soon as you release it the sleeve returns to place and locks the carabiner securely. These crabs feature wide-opening gates a curved spine for ease of clipping, whatever state the cables are in.

Energy Absorption System:


The Energy Absorption System used by Black Diamond is compact and simple. It is based on a "screamer" system which consists of two lengths of webbing which are specially folded and stitched in such a way as in the event of a fall or shock-load the stitches tear, absorbing a huge amount of energy. This may sound alarming but it is actually the most reliable and easy to use shock absorption system on the market.

This via ferrata set may be called the simplest, but in my opinion this simplicity is just perfect. Reasonably lightweight, but its main highlight is its carabiner. The "slide down locking sleeve" operates indeed with one hand. The shape of the orange piece enables a really easy locking action when pushed onto the via ferrata cable. I apparently prefer this to the fancier model, where you have to push the back of the carabiner.

After two years of use I was satisfied with it, so I bought it for my girlfriend as well.

I purchased my Black Diamond Iron Cruiser Via Ferrata Set for a recent trip to El Chorro in preparation for my journey along the Caminito del Rey, the Kings Walkway. I had never had any experience of Via Ferrata in the past so was pleased to find the Iron Cruiser was easy to operate, particularly as the cables were quite frayed in places which made things more tricky in placing the carabiner.

The simple thumb switch action and ergonomic hand shape of the carabiners made clipping much simpler, and the only real flaw was that possibly a little more length on the expanding slings would have been helpful, particularly on one section where the walkway had fallen away, and the length of the slings when clipped onto the wire meant you were walking on a 3” wide iron rail but being pulled into the void over a 100metre drop.
