Black Diamond Halo 28 Jetforce

The Black Diamond Halo 28 Jetforce is ideal for day tours in the mountains where you will need to be carrying avalanche safety equipment as well as the added protection of an airbag in case of avalanche. Comfort is ensured thanks to the reACTIV suspension that allows the hips to move independently of the pack along with SwingArm shoulder straps. The pack has dedicated pockets for probes and shovels as well as diagonal ski carry, neither of which will impede the deployment of the airbag system.

Jetforce is a joint technology that has been developed by Black Diamond and Pieps. Unlike other current airbags that use compressed air Jetforce uses an electronic system that includes a very powerful fan. The Airbag is deployed with the push of a button that powers the fan, quickly inflating the 200 litre airbag. And it can be repacked and redeployed on a single charge up to four times due to the powerful lithium-ion battery.

The trigger handle incorporates a "good-to-go" which checks the entire electronic system every time it's turned on, this is displayed via a series of LED lights. The Jetforce fan inflates the airbag in 4 seconds which is then followed by a series of top up bursts for the next 3 minutes ensuring the bag remains inflated. After 3 minutes the airbag then automatically deflates creating a pocket of air, allowing you to breath should you be buried at this point.

The airbag is manufactured from tough and durable Cordura fabric that is highly puncture resistant and is easy to repack. And one of the major advantages of the Jetforce system is that it is totally travel friendly as there is no compressed air, brilliant for air travel to North America.

Pros

  • Bought this on the 15th Feb. 2017 and have used it for two ski trips - St Anton(March 17) and Hintertux. (April 17). Large, easy to access stash pocket at rear of pack. Diagonal ski carry easy to set up - Place pack front side up - rip flap at base of pack and pull out loop at base of pack and also helmet carry pack. Pull strap tight around skis. At top RHS of pack unzip red looped handle and pull out red strap with klick connector, wrap around ski tips and pull tight and lock the connector. Then, pull out helmet bag with two straps on and simply hook into two fixed loops on top of pack and tighten straps.
  • Deployed the pack 4 times before St Anton and got my pe-pack time down to 12 mins. Found it easy to re-pack providing you remember to take the 'Jetforce' tagged zip all the way down to the bottom of the pack before pulling down the white arrowed tag and clicking in the retainer clips and folding the flaps underneath.
  • Light and easy to carry with useful adjuster straps. Handy, large top left pocket for goggles and ski wax.
  • As you wear it - lower right strap has small, zipped avi tool bag, lower left has zipped bag for leg strap, (the last thing to do before setting out!) - this keeps the pack fixed to your back should you be in an avalanche. Quick metal buckle strap and pull straps to adjust. Although not a boarder, top and bottom carry straps have plenty of adjustment to do so.

Cons

  • Pack was a little bulky at first but was OK on lifts - no need to unstrap although it would be quick to do this.
  • No facility for a hydration system - carry a small bottle or small back pack under your jacket instead.
  • Fabric on Jetforce deployment strap has worn through due to the serrated edge on the deployment handle.
  • Best to go on BD website and print out 'Flying with your Jetforce Avalanche Backpack?' and IATA regs so you can show to Passport /security control at the airport. (Battery power is 58kwatthours max, - the max power legally allowed on the plane is 100kwhours).Some airlines ask that you phone them beforehand and tell them you are carrying an avalanche backpack. Best to disconnect the battery before you go to airport and show them at baggage security to be sure of taking it on plane - I was OK, they hadn't seen one before at my local airport! Yet to test it on a trip to US/Canada.
  • Must check battery is fully charged at resort hotel on arrival. - battery charger - hold luggage.
