The Beta Climbing Clip Stick is a much loved piece of kit to thousands of sport climbers around the world. This remarkably simple to operate device is designed to get the routes 'clipped up' prior to working and the ultimate goal of the red point.

The head of the device is designed to hold the carabiner securely with the gate open, the device should accommodate most carabiners on the market whether they be solid or wire gate. With the quick draw firmly in place and the rope looped through, reach the device up to the bolt and as the carabiner goes through the bolt hanger it will be released from the clip stick and your rope will be safely in place.

The first bolts at some crags have been placed purposely high with the clip stick in mind, sounds crazy but the reason is to minimise the risk of a ground fall when clipping the second bolt. A lot of sport climbers will use the stick to clip the whole route, going from bolt to bolt. In this situation it's a good idea to tie a loop of accessory cord to the clip stick, about 2m.

The clip stick also comes with the famous M16 rifle brush. This can either be attached as per the carabiner using the velcro tape to hold it in place or through the hole at 90°to the main head.

Brilliant bit of kit. Use it whenever sport climbing to either whack the clips in and get hard red points on a top rope, or clipping the first bolts at LPT where a fall is both likely and serious.

I'd go for the bigger one, the length is about 3 ft shorter than advertised because you won't want to use the smallest of the telescopic rods, it's incredibly flimsy and would probably break easily.

Works on nearly all carabiners, but you might want to make sure it works on yours before you buy. Nothing a bit of ductape or elastic band won't fix though.

I bought one of these from Facewest a few months back due to the great price and the recommendation from some mates.

At first I was a bit unsure if the control over it would be enough to make a clip at its full height. Granted, it is a bit difficult, but it soon gets a bit easier with practice. The main thing I’ve used this for is clipping the first bolt on any hard sport routes just to avoid a hard deck out if someone’s placed the bolt a bit high!

A definite sport climbing essential, which will probably end up saving me a few quid in ankle operations! - If your a sport bum, you should really pick one of these up!

Very useful if you do a lot of sport climbing. You can get away without one at a few destinations where the bolts are very close together (e.g., Kalymnos) but it may be a life-saver at most sport crags. At some crags the 1st bolt is so high off the ground that you need to climb up a short distance even with the clip stick at maximum length!

One problem I did have was the normal length stick didn't fit inside my luggage, and it got snapped going through an airport. So I'd recommend either making sure the normal stick can go inside your normal luggage, or use the compact stick for trips abroad.
