Arcteryx Sidewinder SV Jacket (Winter 17)

The Arcteryx Sidewinder SV Jacket is is a rugged snow sport jacket for use in the most extreme weather conditions on the mountain. The Sidewinder SV takes it's name from the, now iconic, curving zip that curves away from the face for additional comfort. It's cut with an Arcteryx relaxed fit so it allows great freedom of movement and flexibility for layering systems.

Made in 3 Layer Gore-Tex® Pro Shell that is the toughest and most durable waterproof fabric in the Gore-Tex® range. The Sidewinder SV has been constructed for intense activity that may include frequent stops providing the high levels of breathability required by the ski/snowboard tourer.

The StormHood™ will fit over any ski/board helmet and is designed to rotate with your head so vision is never impaired. Should you start to get too warm then the pit zips allow for venting. It also has a powder skirt that assists in preventing snow getting inside the jacket along with the Velcro cuffs. The powder skirt, with Slide 'n Lock™, is compatible with the Arcteryx Stinger Pants.

The Arcteryx SIDEWINDER SV jacket is definitely a tough hardshell, comprising high quality without sacrificing mobility as it is lightweight, given its nature. It seems capable to withstand inclement weather and unforgiving environments, offering, therefore, dependable weather protection for prolonged exposure to severe conditions. It is exceptionally durable, the outer fabric looks extremely abrasion resistant and fully waterproof. The fit is both slick and rugged, combining the seemingly distant worlds of mobility, elegance and comfort. The result is a garment that not only guarantees freedom of movement but facilitates layering. The anatomic and articulated construction with regard to the elbows, the sleeves and the underarms is second to none. The nicely appointed features include:

  • Excellent adjustability of the hood (in 3 ways).
  • Amazingly seamless operation of the zippers.
  • Asymmetric front zipper which curves away from the face.
  • Tall collar.
  • Practical velcro wrist cuffs.
  • Easy adjustability of the hem.
  • Ergonomic overall pocket configuration.
  • The coveted Recco reflector.

If I had to pick some features which, to my point of view, necessitate revamp I would focus on the following:

  • The front chin guard with the brushed microsuede should extent to the sides covering the cheeks and enhancing the snug feeling.
  • The bunch of tags must be removed from the one main lateral hand pocket as they are pretty annoying.
  • A cloth for the wiping of goggles or sunglasses is missing.
  • The integrated powder skirt could be removable.
  • The internal chest zippered pocket ought to be larger in order to accommodate better an electronic device or a big smartphone. A second mesh pocket would also look the part, especially if someone carries gloves.
  • Finally, I recommend the product not only for skiing but for other outdoor activities (trekking, trail running, hiking) and urban use as well.

My first arcteryx jacket, so far very impressed. Upgraded from salomon jackets that I have had over the past few years for snowboarding. I like to wear a shell and put layers underneath depending on conditions but last couple of seasons all new snowboarding and skiing jackets seem to be insulated which usually makes me too hot on sunny days. Sidewinder is remarkably lightweight but seems very strong. It has good sized pockets for spare lens etc., powder skirt, lift pass pocket - but nothing superfluous. I particularly like the cuffs which you can tighten very securely with Velcro and fit very neatly under the gauntlet style gloves I wear. I'm 6' 2" and 105kg and got the Xl which is quite baggy but hangs nicely. I have paired with an Atom LT jacket in XL which is a snug fit on me but fits easily under the Sidewinder. Both extremely comfortable to wear (used to go hiking last weekend) and very breathable.

The quality of material is a different class to the jackets I have worn for the past 20 years - seems bulletproof. Two small niggles - it has a a very large, fixed hood, which although fits easily and comfortably over a helmet might flap a bit when going fast (time will tell). Also the material is slightly stiff and so it makes quite a pronounced rustling noise as i walk around in it - it may well be that it will soften with use. But overall I am delighted with it with and think it is worth the extra price over the jackets I have previously used - can't wait to try it out on the slopes. Facewest was the best price available and also great customer service.

Just bought this jacket in emerald green. Looks great and feels top end quality, worth the money and facewest best price I found. Have been researching for some time and this jacket seems to fit the bill.

Ordered XL originally as my chest size was between L and XL. Too big and returned it for the L that fits great, sizes seem to run a little large due to expedition fit, for off piste and general skiing not necessary in my opinion.

All the staff at facewest are very helpful and very well informed, seem a professional company and would not hesitate to recommend them. Going to use it with a light down jacket from RAB to layer, plenty of room.

Can't wait to try it out on the white stuff. Plus points - well made top end product at a great price. Minus points - None that I can see.

    Thanks facewest.

We spend a lot of time in the Aravis, summer and winter. I've wanted one of these jackets for years. This is my first piece of Arctyrx clothing. So far very impressed with the solid build and finish of the coat. The "expedition cut" does mean that you could probably go down a size unless you expect to be wearing a full down jacket under it most of the time. In other jackets I've always been a medium or sometimes large. On the Arctyrx website I measure as a medium by both the methods they give on there. Fair play to Facewest, when I rang them for advice they said that I might want to try a small and swop it over if I wasn't happy. Went instead for the medium and I have plenty of room. Time will tell if it's too much.
