Arcteryx Gamma MX Hoody (Summer 17)

The Gamma MX is the official uniform softshell jacket of the British Mountain Guides. A solid recommendation from some very demanding users.

The Arcteryx Gamma MX Hoody is a tough and durable alpine jacket that has been cut to allow exceptional freedom of movement, with gusseted underarms and an articulated cut. The long hip length fit allows a climbing harness to be comfortably worn over the top preventing any gaps in your weather protection. The Arcteryx Storm Hood is fully helmet compatible fitting over any helmet whether skiing or climbing. And when on it's quickly adjusted to fit neatly, keeping the weather at bay.

Fortis 2.0 fabric has been used through out the MX Hoody. The stretch woven nylon face fabric has been laminated to a brushed polyester backer allowing for excellent breathability and air permeability. The DWR treated face fabric ensures snow and moisture is easily shed, allowing you to keep your hardshell in your pack for only the worst weather. Four-way stretch along with the relaxed fit ensures your comfort as you move on the mountain.

Miles Bright Reviews the Gamma MX Hoody

I've been abusing my Gamma MX hoody for two years. It's a great bit of kit for skiing and alpine climbing. Thanks to those clever people at Arc'teryx the hood is a work of art. It fits over a helmet or can be tightened so it's snug over a wooly hat. There's a great peak which works well even when the hood is tightened around your face. The collar can be zipped up to cover your chin but stops at just the right spot so you can breathe unhindered. Even when you're totally sealed into the hood it still turns with your head and doesn't effect your vision. The Fortius 2.0 fabric keeps out the wind, sheds snow and is wonderfully stretchy. Combine this great fabric with clever design throughout the jacket and you end up with wonderful freedom of movement. I particularly like being able to reach for high holds without pulling the jacket out of my harness. After lots of use my Gamma MX hoody still looks great.

The gamma mx is the latest edition to my outdoor wardrobe. After I'd already payed out for a hard shell and insulation layers for the winter months I decided on this as a best of the worst weather jacket.

It's proven to be much more than that and is my regular go to now its not too heavy, warm, wind resistant, has excellent DWR although does wet out in a down pour. It's smart looking and has bags of storage! The chest pockets are great for extra gloves and a hat and the arm pocket is small gps size. Although smaller than an iPhone.

The detail cut and fit is of course perfection from arcteryx I'm a regular 5'10" and its like a second skin in large (not tight but not loose).

I've only strayed from arcteryx once since I found them and I regretted it! They are expensive but there second to none.

Next on the list Squamish hoody for summer - thanks facewest

Cracking hoody. Comfy, breathable and DWR is holding up so far. I'm 6ft8 and slim athletic build (aka Lanky), 230lbs and the XL is a lovely fit. Can wear it by itself or can layer under. The arms are an excellent length and don't ride up when you use your hands for something like cycling. I can wear this outside and then come indoors and still be at a comfortable temp. As for breathabilty it's great for me, get a tiny bit of air flow which helps control the sweat. Looks good and although the price is high the fit for me and quality makes it worth it.

I used to have the non-hooded version of this jacket. It was superb and served me well for 8 years, showing the quality of Arc'teryx kit. After it gave up the ghost I decided to replace it with the hoody version.

Again, the quality is excellent, as is the fit. I look forward to many years of good use from it!

I am 6'13'' and 187lbs more athletic than average built with long hands and purchased Large.

This jacket is by far the best soft shell I have ever bought. Price is high but on sale acceptable. It is all that it is advertised. Dries fast, keeps me warm, dry and block the wind pretty well, comfortable fit, plenty of storage space, and it is tough. There is insulation but not heavy so this makes it excellent for layering.

Design is perfect and fit just as it should. Great build quality, athletic fit, technically very functional, excellent range of motion, hood has amazing volume, pockets are well positioned and easy to use but it would be nice if there were internal zippered pocket as well, provides excellent balance of mobility, breathability, warmth, weight, wind and water resistance.

It could be a bit longer in the front but the back drops down below my waist to cover butt. Sleeve length fit great but it has very snug wrist and it can be annoying to get over a watch when taking the jacket off.

Sheds light rain and snow amazingly. Not a weatherproof piece, but not advertised as such either. I would still recommend hardshell for anything more than light precipitation or moderate winds though.

It has good amount of stretchiness what makes it extremely comfortable and it breathes well considering that it has no pit-zip vents. The lack pit-zips does make it a little stuffy in hotter conditions but otherwise this is a good buy overall. It could breath better if it have some zip vents under the armpits.

Excellent service and really fast delivery.
