The Arcteryx Beta AR Jacket is a superbly versatile jacket for use in harsh mountain conditions, ideal for the climber or backcountry skier requiring a minimal jacket in the most durable and breathable Gore-Tex fabric. The Beta AR has a hip length cut for ease of use with a harness and has been shaped with an athletic fit, though generous enough to allow for layering. The main body uses a lighter fabric in order to reduce the overall weight and make the jacket more packable. The shoulders and hood top have a heavier reinforcing fabric ensuring the jacket will not let you down on harsh days.
Gore-Tex Pro is the toughest and most durable waterproof fabric in the Gore-Tex range. It has been constructed for intense activity that may include frequent stops providing the high levels of breathability required by the climber, mountaineer or ski tourer.
The two hand pockets are generously sized for stuffing gloves, maps or guidebooks into, while inside the internal laminated pocket will keep valuables safe. The main front WaterTight Vislon zip is really easy to use and will keep driving rain out. A helmet compatible hood has great adjustment allowing for a good seal and will rotate with your head so vision is never impaired. The Beta AR is certainly a trusted and rugged hard shell for mountain use.

I have a Beta Lt jacket which I have worn all summer. When I was looking for a winter waterproof shell which was always going to be Arcteryx, it was a choice between the Beta AR and the Theta AR. The new Beta AR in the new Admiral colour was my final choice. The fit is excellent, shorter than the Theta but still gives good cover. I am comfortable with a base layer and a light fleece during high activity, but can fit a light down jacket underneath when the weather gets colder. The inside pocket could be larger as an iphone just fits inside. The Beta AR meets all my requirements and is now one of my favourite jackets
Gore outer jacket put through its paces in some heavy weather.
Pros: Good helmet-friendly hood, good zippers, easy to secure velcro tabs on the wrists, quality gore jacket.
Cons: Sizing is a little conservative and you may want to think about sizing up to accommodate a puffy jacket as an under-layer if you are inclined to do so often.
This is has been a great jacket. It's light in weight but totally bombproof. I have had mine two years and have worn it for nearly two hundred days skiing through all sorts of weathers and also walking and climbing in the UK mountains and it's not let me down. I've washed it twice and it's come up clean and still beads on the surface and looks like new.
Other things I like are, it packs down small, the hood will pull over a helmet, and it doesn't flap in the wind. It's cut quite short which is good for climbing and using with a harness, but you will need to pack over trousers if you're out in a storm.
They are not cheap but if I lost it I would get exactly the same again.
