The Arcteryx Khamski 38 is a specific backcountry 38 litre touring pack designed for long days in the mountains, be it touring or fast and light days out. The back-panel provides superb support via the high density foam and has a Burly™ double weave fabric ensuring durability. Moisture management and comfort on the shoulder straps is provided by the Hypercell™ foam and is combined with breathable Spacemesh™. Internal aluminium stays, which are removable, ensure the Khamski 38 is always supported and retains it's shape.
A waterproof front kangaroo pocket stows a shovel and probe and can be accessed quickly in an emergency. The extendable and removable lid makes the pack very versatile for those looking to save weight. It also benefits from having a one handed axe carry system for your tools, two haul loops/carry handles so the pack can be secured at snow anchors, and has a lightly padded winged hip belt, to aid with spreading the carry load comfortably.
Dave Hollinger, British Mountain Guide reviews the Arc'teryx Khamski 38.
As an IFMGA mountain guide I need confidence in my equipment and don't want to make compromises. I'm not quite sure how Arcteryx do it but the Khamski 38 is another design that just seems to work. Having tried several dedicated ski packs in the past (and concluded most were over complicated, gimmicky, heavy and rarely big enough for genuine high mountain ski touring) I did not immediately expect to be that impressed. However here is a ski pack that on paper seems bigger than average (but skis incredible well as a day pack with the lid off or in the main body of the pack) and then doesn't require any compromise on packing for longer tours.
It's comfortable to carry, provides easy access to all avi safety gear (without compromising access to the main sack) and carries skis quickly and easily via a simple attachment that looks, on paper, like it ought not to work...but does!
Quite how the pack can look and feel as tough as it does yet weigh less than many smaller and less robust alternatives defies belief and, while initially sceptical, have found all the slightly randomly positioned pockets to be in exactly the right place for various jobs.
If you never ski/tour in the backcountry and high mountains then there are plenty of smaller, more compact packs that will be fine but the Khamski 38 really does deliver as a ski touring pack that will cover you for everything from day hits off the lifts to multi day tours..and will stand up to all the use and abuse you can throw at it.

After my BCA stash started to fall to bits I was apprehensive about buying this lightweight rucksack, the construction is very robust though and although lightweight, will be durable I think.
The diagonal ski carry loops work well, but it relies on the strap under the lid (usually used to secure a rope) to fasten the skis. I.e you'd have to carry skis as an 'A' if you also want to carry a rope.
All the pockets, zips etc are well though out and arranged. The zips aren't particularly fancy but they kept the rain out.
Very comfortable to wear despite (or perhaps because) the back being unpadded thick flat plastic like material. Fine in winter but could get sweaty if the pack was used in summer I think.
Enough room for multi day tours (the lid can extend up if necessary).
An excellent ski touring pack.
